IthacaNet, Inc. is the host of the fourth annual Networking Tompkins County conference, on March 21st in Textor Hall on the Ithaca College campus.
As in previous years, the conference brings together local decision makers and nationally-known speakers for a day of discussion and information. Around 300 people have attended the event each of the last two years, and praise from the attendees of the conference is always high--both for the quality of the information, and the chance to network with others working on similar projects around Tompkins County.
This year our keynote speaker is Steve Cisler, a long-time advocate of
community networking, and, until recently, the head of Apple Computer's
Library of Tomorrow program. In addition, speaker tracks held through the
day will focus on the themes of What's In It for You "@ Work",
"@ Home", and "@ Large". In addition to the speaker
tracks, we also have networking-related vendors, and demonstration rooms
where people can talk one-on-one with those who have worked on parts of
connecting Tompkins County together for the new century.
Kid Build '98, sponsored by TENET, Incorporated, Information and Referral Services (a program of the Human Services Coalition), and Center Ithaca - TSD Associates.
With the proliferation of computers in schools, even at the lower grades, it becomes necessary for all children to have access to computers, printers and electronic mail or search services. At the base level, children who can use computers to produce superior looking papers for class have an advantage over those who either type or write by hand. At higher levels, the ability to connect to the outside world via computer (e.g. World Wide Web or Electronic Mail) can provide opportunities for learning unavailable in any other medium. For this reason, TENET has been refurbishing and distributing computers to children in need for many years. Kid Build '98 springs from this ongoing effort.
Children who have no access to, and cannot otherwise afford a computer will either get older, otherwise unwanted computers or build their own computers out of parts and old systems donated by individuals, institutions and corporations. Thus, the kids will be able to build and maintain their own systems, and work with donated software to be able to do their homework, type papers or stories, start projects of their own devising, etc. Some machines may even be capable of electronic mail or net access. In any case, the kids will be able to take their computers home, to keep them, upgrade them over time, and use them for both school and recreation.
People have generously provided not only computers (for which we are still looking), but also licensed software (for which we are also still looking), printers, monitors, and lots of information. In addition, many have come forward to volunteer as teachers and on-hand technicians for the day. As the Human Services Coalition is a not-for-profit charitable organization, donations of equipment, software and supplies are completely tax deductable, and donors may receive a receipt for their generous gifts.
We currently need not only equipment, but also volunteers to help children take their computers home from the event. If you'd like to help provide transportation for these kids, please join us.
Kid Build '98 will take place on 22 March 1998, at Center Ithaca, and should run from about 12:30 to 4:30. Volunteers will begin setting up at about 9 am, and cleaning up at about 4:30 pm.
Kids will be recruited through various agencies and organizations, but individuals from anywhere who are in need of equipment and unable to supply it for themselves are welcome. If you are interested in recieving one of these computers, you will need to call to reserve space at the event, otherwise there may not be enough computers.
For more information, to register your child to get a computer, or to arrange a donation please contact: Bill Altman, Kid Build '98 Coordinator, TENET, Incorporated, 273-3670, e-mail: morlock@clarityconnect.com

MUGWUMP, Ithaca's Macintosh users group, presents Mac Inter-Networking: What's in it for You? on Wednesday, March 25th at 7:00 pm, Ithaca College's Textor Hall, Room103.
How can you get in on the glitz of the Internet with your home Macintosh? What roles do local Internet service providers (ISPs) like Clarity Connect and Lightlink play? What's the fastest speed you can attain with your equipment and what determines how fast the Internet will work for you? What different services do the local ISPs provide and what makes them unique? How do the national services like MCI and AT&T OneNet play into all of this?
These questions and more will be answered by the very people who bring
these types of services to you! And we might even be giving away a means
for you to try out the Internet at home to a lucky attendee.
