William L. Schrader is chairman of the board of directors, chief executive officer, and founder of PSINet, one of the world's largest and most experienced commercial Internet service providers. Publicly traded on the NASDAQ market as PSIX, PSINet operates in 12 countries, serves over 55,000 companies, and offers a broad suite of advanced Internet and Web service products. Mr. Schrader has authored numerous position statements, spoken in industry events, and appeared on Capitol Hill to present industry and corporate position on such issues as Internet encryption, the domain name system, and the Communications Decency Act.

Mr. Schrader will focus his remarks in Ithaca on the emerging technologies for local and long distance Internet bandwidth increases for both business and home users, the economic-technical-political effects that the multimedia Internet is having on the changing telecommunications infrastructure, and discuss the public policy issues and other internet-related trends both from a global and regional point of view. As well as entertain a few questions.

Amphitheater Web Filters for Schools and Libraries

As Internet connections become more common in public libraries and public schools, parents, school board members, and government officials nationwide are wondering what to do about access to material that may not be suitable for children. Congress is currently debating a bill to tie the funding for schools' and libraries' Internet access to the use of filtering technology. This session will present different viewpoints on the issue of Internet filters in schools and libraries, and provide time for audience discussion.

Y2K: Hype or Reality?

The final session of the conference features two local speakers who have been spending far more time than they'd like dealing with the millennium bug, the Y2K problem we've all heard so much about.

  • Patricia (Pat) Vaughan is a member of Ithaca's Common Council and of the Tompkins County Y2K Information Network, and will review some of the work our local municipalities are doing to prepare for the rollover from 99 to 00.
  • Ron Parks is in charge of Y2K remediation efforts for Cornell's administrative systems, and has been giving talks around the area on what the issues are and how they're likely to impact computer systems of various types.
