BC-L Informational Bulletin 3.2

Thank you for your interest in BC-L, a mailing list where members discuss information and issues related to the Border Collie. BC-L is a privately owned discussion list that is made available, free of any membership fees, to the international community of Border Collie enthusiasts. Whether you have a Border Collie as a companion or working dog, or would just like to know more about the breed, you are invited to become a member of this friendly and supportive online community.

People of all levels of experience actively participate in BC-L from dog behavior experts, Border Collie rescuers, and reputable breeders, to people involved in the different activities that Border Collies are good at and people who have just obtained their first Border Collie. All the ups and downs of living with a highly intelligent dog are discussed, with perspectives ranging from professional to just plain fun and cute. Topics discussed include, but are not limited to, breeding, showing, rescuing, herding, and just living with Border Collies. BC-L is an extended community that laughs and cries together. Subscribers are eager to share information and experiences, especially when it might help people have a happy, healthy Border Collie, and a great relationship with that dog.

Please carefully follow the directions below to successfully complete the subscription process. This bulletin was created to help you avoid any misunderstandings and to inform you of BC-L's rules and regulations and what would be expected of you as a subscriber to BC-L. Please read the bulletin in its entirety, and then print and save the paper copy somewhere safe for future reference.

AGREEMENT

As a new or re-subscriber, in order for you to be successfully added to the list so you can read BC-L messages and make contributions, you must send an e-mail message containing the following paragraph to the BC-L subscription manager at <CGL1@cornell.edu>. In the Subject line of your e-mail message, type "New Membership Agreement for BC-L". In the body of your message, cut and paste or retype the following paragraph:

I, [your full legal name here], am accepting membership in BC-L which I join willfully an voluntarily. I have received a copy of the BC-L Informational Bulletin which has advised me of my responsibility as a member, and I fully understand and agree that I am subject to all terms stated therein. I hereby request that my subscription be accepted so I can read list postings and make contributions.

Important Notes

When responding to this request by e-mail, edit (cut and paste, etc.) or retype the paragraph so that only the indented Agreement paragraph above remains, inserting your full legal name where indicated. Include the Subject line shown above as the subject line of your e-mail. Do not respond to this request by e-mailing back the text of this entire bulletin. The list management cannot edit your Agreement response message for you. Consult your e-mail software's online help or manual if you don't know how to do this.

Your agreement cannot be processed if the Agreement paragraph is incomplete, if its text has been altered in any way (except for inserting your name), if more than the required Agreement paragraph is sent, or if the message is not sent to the correct list administration address specified above.

Requests for subscriptions using e-mail addresses or account names that are, in the opinion of list management, inflammatory or provocative, or that attempt to conceal the identity of the subscribers from the list as a whole, will not be accepted.

SUBSCRIBER TERMS AND CONDITIONS

By returning the indented Agreement section above as directed, you expressly and unconditionally agree to the following conditions of BC-L membership.

  1. List membership is a personal privilege granted to you by the list owners and their designated list management personnel in response to your application. BC-L is privately owned, and as a guest on this list you are subject to all rules and regulations that are set forth by the BC-L list management. If at any time you should find yourself in disagreement with any of the rules and regulations, you have the option to terminate your subscription.
  2. You are responsible for your actions while on BC-L, and your subscription may be terminated at any time for failing, in the opinion of the list management, to follow any rules that you have been made aware of in this bulletin, or in supplementary messages from the list management that you may receive from time to time by e-mail.
  3. The purpose of BC-L is to discuss Border Collies; messages that have no pertinence to Border Collies, or that conflict with any other content or language guidelines stated elsewhere in this bulletin, are unsuitable for posting on the list and may result in termination of your subscription.
  4. Since BC-L is dedicated to the well-being of the Border Collie, BC-L is not to be used in any way, shape, or form to promote or facilitate the irresponsible breeding, sale, or transport of Border Collies. Nor is BC-L to be used to facilitate or promote the sale or procurement of puppies by, to, from, or for individuals or organizations whose primary interest and goals are not in the best interest of the Border Collie.
  5. Opinions and statements made either by a subscriber or the list management are entirely their opinions and should NEVER be confused with the purposes, policies, or directives of Cornell University.
  6. As a subscriber to BC-L, you expressly indemnify the list owners, the list managers, and Cornell University from any legal action that may be taken against you by any other party in connection with your use or misuse of BC-L, or of the Cornell University ListProcesssor.
  7. Despite copyright laws, the materials posted to BC-L may be reposted in other formats and duplicated in other mediums over which the list management has no control. The list management therefore disclaims liability for any copyright infringement or claimed loss attributed by you to such infringement. By subscribing to BC-L, you expressly agree to hold the list management harmless and without liability for any such infringement or loss claimed by you as a result of actions of others with respect to written material submitted by you to BC-L.

POSTING RULES

Share, play fair, and don't hit. Say you're sorry when you hurt someone. Watch out for traffic. Be aware of wonder. And realize that warm biscuits and cool water are good for you and your dog.

We are brought together due to a common bond, our Border Collies. Treat the other members of BC-L as you treat your canine companions. Help them, show them, respect them, and most of all appreciate them. We look forward to your active participation.

Fair Play

  1. When responding to messages on BC-L, please respond in terms of your personal opinion. Respond to the ideas expressed and not to the specific person. Respect and tolerate differences of opinion, even if you disagree.
  2. Personal attacks are not allowed. Period.
  3. Flaming -- the act of berating someone for a message they posted -- is not allowed. In the same way, discriminatory or harassing messages are not permitted. Judgmental and condescending tones are discouraged. If you disagree with someone and cannot be civil in your response, please say nothing.
  4. Politics, such as "my group is better than your group", is discouraged. Healthy discussion is acceptable and encouraged; however, should the BC-L list management ask that the discussion be curtailed, it must be.

Posting Courtesy

  1. You may post messages on any topic that is directly related to Border Collies and is in accordance with all guidelines
  2. When replying to a message, include something (a quote, paraphrase, summary) so that other subscribers understand to what you are replying. If you quote the original message, retain only what is pertinent and edit the text to the minimum necessary to convey the original idea. Most of the people on the list have already read the message and do not need to read the entire message again.
  3. Do not send one-line or similarly minimal replies. While you are encouraged to participate, if you have nothing of substance to add to the discussion, please don't post.
  4. Commercial messages and signatures, in whole and in part, such as listing items or pups for sale, are not allowed. Non-profit groups must seek approval from the list management before publicizing a group or announcing a fundraiser.
  5. Do not send attachments of any kind. For example, if you wish to share a scanned image of your dog with fellow subscribers, please do so privately off the list. For additional examples of attachments, see the Formatting section below.
  6. Always put a short signature, that is, your name and e-mail address, at the end of your messages. The signature lets other subscribers reply to your message privately if appropriate. Please keep signatures short, a maximum of five lines.
  7. When posing questions, keep in mind:
    1. Surveys are not permitted.
    2. Closed questions, those that can be answered with a simple "yes" or "no", are discouraged.
    3. Be sure to include background information, your thoughts, and perhaps an answer to your own question. Discussion often springs from self-disclosure, a description of the circumstances, or other information you provide.
  8. When replying to a message, please be sure the Subject line of your e-mail reflects the content of your response. When changing a subject line, include the previous subject, "(was [previous subject])" after the new subject
For example, "Subject: barking (was keeping cool)", would be helpful. If you reply to a subject like "barking (was keeping cool)", you may drop the "(was keeping cool)" and just have "Re: barking" as the Subject line.
  9. If you receive BC-L in digest form and you reply to a message, always edit your Subject line to refer to the subject of the message to which you are replying. If you do not do this, the subject ends up being generic and unhelpful: "Re: BC-L Digest #".
  10. Please send administrative comments and questions to the list management at <BC-L-request@cornell.edu> (never to the list itself).

Formatting

BC-L's hundreds of subscribers use every conceivable variety of e-mail software. For this reason, it is essential that all messages sent to BC-L be kept simple in terms of format. This means plain-vanilla alpha-numeric characters only -- the characters you have on your keyboard.

Many of the newer e-mail programs -- Microsoft Internet Mail, Netscape Mail, Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express, Eudora, Pegasus, and others -- can do special formatting using "HTML tags", "rich text", or "MIME-encoded" format information, making it possible to change fonts, put words in bold or italic type, and so on. However, many older e-mail programs cannot read this formatting, and they turn it into meaningless "garbage" characters or unnecessary encoded file attachments.

Therefore, go through your e-mail program's set-up or configuration dialog looking for option checkboxes that say things like "HTML formatting", "rich text", or "MIME encoding", and make sure all such options are unchecked (disabled) before you send any messages to BC-L.

Similarly, attached binary files (such as scanned photos, graphic images, animations, or executable programs) should never be sent to BC-L. Many users don't have the software and/or expertise to decode and access them. Make arrangements to send them via private e-mail to those who want them.

Posting Messages to BC-L

To send a message to all of BC-L's subscribers (over 700), address your message to <BC-L@cornell.edu>. Only subscribers to BC-L may post to the list.

SUBSCRIPTION SERVICES

ListProc Commands

BC-L runs on CREN's ListProc at Cornell University. All commands need to be placed in the body of e-mail and sent to <ListProc@cornell.edu>. Type the command on the first line in the body of your e-mail message. Do not add any extra text such as a signature. All commands are case insensitive.

1. Cancel your subscription

To cancel your subscription, send the following command to <ListProc@cornell.edu>:

unsub BC-L

If you send this and receive a message back from ListProc that you are not subscribed and therefore cannot unsubscribe, contact the list management at <BC-L-request@cornell.edu>. Most likely the routing of your address has changed and you will need to be removed manually.

2. Subscribe

To subscribe or re-subscribe, send the following command to <ListProc@cornell.edu>:

sub BC-L fullname

replacing "fullname" with your real full name.

3. Check your subscription status

To check your subscription status and mail delivery option (described below), send the following command to <ListProc@cornell.edu>:

query BC-L

If you stop receiving mail unexpectedly, check your subscription status before writing to the list management at <BC-L-request@cornell.edu> for help.

4. Receive messages individally or as digests

You may receive list mail as individual messages or grouped into a digest. The default when you subscribe or re-subscribe is individual messages. The digest is a compilation of several messages into one large e-mail message; the messages are not edited. Each digest has a table of contents is and is delivered at 2:00 a.m. (or earlier if the size limit of 500 lines is reached). Multiple digests may be delivered in a single day. Whether you receive messages individually, or grouped into a digest, the content of the messages is identical. Many BC-L subscribers find the digest option invaluable in handling the sometimes large volume of mail.

To change your mail delivery option to the digest, send the following command to <ListProc@cornell.edu>:

set BC-L mail digest

To change your mail delivery option to individual messages, send the following command to <ListProc@cornell.edu>:

set BC-L mail ack

5. Temporarily stop mail delivery

If you're going to be away or otherwise unable to read BC-L for a while, consider setting your mail to postpone. Messages are not held for later delivery, but archives are kept for up to two weeks (see below). To stop mail, send the following command to <ListProc@cornell.edu>:

set BC-L mail postpone

To un-postpone and resume mail delivery, send either the ACK or DIGEST command described above.

6. Obtain a list of subscribers

Access to the list of subscribers is restricted to the list management only. If you want to obtain the names or addresses of one or more subscribers, send your request to the list management at <BC-L-request@cornell.edu>.

7. Access the Archives

Archives of BC-L digests are kept for at least two weeks. Access is restricted to subscribers only. To obtain an index, send an e-mail message with the following command in the body to <ListProc@cornell.edu>:

index BC-L

To obtain a specific digest from the archive, send the following command (delete the brackets):

get BC-L digest<number>

For example: get BC-L digest1200

Unexpected Changes: No mail, Digest, Unsub

If your mailbox becomes full and generates a delivery error, your address will be removed from the BC-L subscription file. To avoid having your mailbox overflow while you are on vacation or otherwise unable to check your mail for a period of time, consider sending the set BC-L mail postpone command (described above) to <ListProc@cornell.edu>.

If your address or site generates other delivery errors, your address may be removed from the BC-L subscription file. This may occur if your site loses its Internet connection, your e-mail account expires, or if your service provider experiences any of a wide array of problems.

If you suddenly stop receiving mail or receive an unsubscribe notification, check your subscription status by sending a query command (described above) command to <ListProc@cornell.edu>. If the problem was only temporary, please subscribe command (described above) again at your convenience.

If you receive notification that you have been switched to the digest, but you did not issue the command to do so, it's likely that the BC-L list management switched your mail option because your site was temporarily generating error messages. Please feel free to set your mail option back to ack (described above) in a few days or whenever the problem at your site has been resolved.
